There weren’t more brands, features, and configurations to consider, and since we’re still dealing with inflation, you might also be concerned about the price hike. The good news is that companies are still making plenty of new laptops, and there’s a wide range of models for you to choose from, from the budget HP Pavilion Aero 13 to the convertible Microsoft Surface Pro 9 to our best overall pick for the Apple MacBook Air M2. We’ve made it less complicated for you to choose the best laptop for your needs.

You probably have an idea of your budget here, but as you know, most modern laptops with the latest specs can cost you around $1,800 to $2,000 these days. That’s not to say you won’t find a good system for under $1,000—large is the base price for a lot of ultraportables in the 13-inch class, with chips like Intel’s Core i3 or i5 series. And if that’s too expensive, you’ll still have decent options in the $600 to $800 range, but they may come with older, slower processors, and duller screens. After deciding how much you want to spend, the first thing you need to narrow down is your laptop’s operating system. As always, the decision is a little easier for people who prefer the Apple MacBook. Now that the company has brought its M-series chipsets to their full suite — your only real considerations are budget, screen size, and how much power you need.
However, in Windows Team, the transition to ARM-based chips has not been smooth. Although Apple was able to achieve massive increases in battery life while maintaining (and in some cases improving) performance with its own silicon, PC makers were limited by Windows’ shortcomings. Microsoft released Windows 11 last year, and it should run better on ARM-powered devices. Since the first laptops, like Lenovo’s ThinkPad X13s or 10w Tablet, haven’t been available for review yet, we can’t tell how well the system will run. Of course, you can upgrade to Windows 11 on existing ARM-based PCs, but for now, it’s still safer to stick with an Intel or AMD processor.
Let’s not forget that there is a third and fairly popular mobile operating system: Chrome OS. If you do most of your work in a browser (lots of online research, emails, and Google Drive), a Chromebook may be a suitable option, and it’s often quite affordable.
As for other things to look out for, it’s worth noting that two of the laptops coming out this year are ditching headphone jacks. While this doesn’t seem to be a mainstream trend yet, it’s a good reminder to check that the device has all the connectors you need. Most laptops in 2022 offer WiFi 6 or 6E and Bluetooth 5.0 or later, which means faster and more stable connections if you have compatible routers and devices. While 5G coverage is more widespread this year, whether you need support for that depends on how much you travel.
Where you plan to take your laptop also helps determine what size you want to get. Several companies launched new 14-inch machines in the past year, straddling the line between ultraportable and larger 15-inch offerings. For most people, the 14-inch screen is a great compromise. But if you’re concerned about weight, a 12- or 13-inch model is better. Those who want more powerful processors and larger screens will prefer the 15- or 16-inch versions.
Best Overall: MacBook Air M2
As a Windows user, I find myself reluctant to call the Apple MacBook the best laptop overall. But I can’t deny that Apple’s shift to its own Silicon has made its hardware better. This is not to say that the M1 was a slow machine — quite the opposite. We found it impressively fast, and the M2 can only build on this excellent performance. Plus, the impressive 16.5 hours of battery life should be enough for anyone to get through a day’s worth of work and then some.
As for its design, we like that Apple took a uniformly thinner approach here and retired the wedge shape of the previous model. The M2 Air also has an impressive 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display, interrupted only by the top portion that holds the 1080p webcam. The quad-speaker setup is also an improvement, and all of these small hardware changes add up to a device that looks and feels way more than you might expect from its predecessor. However, both the Apple M1 and M2 MacBook Air laptops remain powerful machines. Given that the M2 starts at $1,199, those on tight budgets might be willing to forgo the new design improvements in order to save some cash and get a laptop that’s still fast.
Best Windows OS: Dell XPS 13 Plus
The best PC has always been a good Dell XPS 13 series And it remains the best laptop for anyone who doesn’t want a Mac. Yes The new XPS 13 Plus It lacks a headphone jack, and we don’t have one to test yet. But the XPS 13 is a fine Windows laptop and it’s still one of the best PCs out there.
Like its predecessors, the Dell XPS 13 Plus offers a beautiful OLED screen with amazingly thin bezels and has a spacious, comfortable keyboard. It also features a new minimalist design that looks more modern. I’m not sure about the row of capacitive keys across the top in place of the traditional function keys, but I’m confident that the laptop’s 12th Gen Intel Core processors will deliver healthy performance from the latest model.
If you’re not sure about the changes Dell made to the XPS 13, or if you definitely need a headphone jack, the older generations are still solid options. There’s also the Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro series, which features beautiful OLED screens and sharper webcams in thin and light bezels. I also love Microsoft’s Surface Laptops, and the latest version offers great performance and battery life, albeit with an outdated design.
Best for gaming: Razer Blade 15
Gamers should look for machines with solid build quality, responsive screens, and ample ports for their favorite accessories that can best help them defeat their virtual enemies. It’s the most expensive item on this list, but you get a 15-inch Quad HD display with a 240Hz refresh rate, 13th-generation Intel processors, and NVIDIA GeForce 40-series graphics. Various configurations are available, depending on your preference, including Full HD 360Hz and 4K 144Hz version. The Blade series is also one of the most polished and most powerful laptops out there.
Those looking for a gaming laptop should consider this ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, which was our favorite model last year. The main reason it held back a bit is that the 2022 update is about $600 more expensive. It’s still a solid gaming laptop, with an excellent screen, spacious trackpad, and plenty of ports despite its slim form.
Best Chromebook: Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook
Our favorite Chromebook is Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook, which BanglaWebTools’s resident Chrome OS enthusiast Nathan Ingraham calls “a tremendous value.” This laptop nails the essentials, with a 13-inch HD touchscreen, a great keyboard, and a 10th Gen Intel Core i3 processor. The 4GB of RAM and 64GB SSD may seem slim, but in our testing the Flex 5 held its own despite this limitation. It’s also nice to see two USB-A ports and two USB-C ports, 8 hours of battery life and a 360-degree hinge make it easy to use the Flex 5 as a tablet. That’s a bonus, especially now that Chrome OS supports Android apps.
Even though the Flex 5 is almost two years old, this Lenovo Chromebook is a solid bargain at around $400. In fact, you can sometimes find it on sale for as low as $300, which makes it a great option for someone looking for a basic browser-based device on a budget.
Best budget: HP Pavilion Aero 13
If you’re looking for a budget laptop around $800, this is your best bet HP Aero Suite 13. For about $799 (or often less when on sale), you get a Full HD display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and surprisingly narrow bezels, plus a comfortable keyboard and spacious touchpad. Most importantly, the Aero 13 offers relatively powerful components compared to others in this price range, with an AMD Ryzen 5000 series processor and Radeon graphics. Plus, it has a great selection of ports and enough battery life to get you through your workday and then some.

For those who need their laptops to double as tablets once in a while, the Surface Pro series is a good option. Compared to laptops with a rotating hinge, kickstand tablets are often slimmer and lighter. the Surface Pro 9 It’s the latest 2-in-1 laptop model from Microsoft, and if you’ve had your eye on the Surface for a while, just know that it’s getting an Intel version of this device instead of an ARM model. It’s attractive and has a great 13-inch screen, and we still consider Microsoft’s Writing Cover to be one of the best you can get, period. It will cost extra, so be prepared to shell out another $100 for a $180 one. Microsoft’s Slim Pen 2 is another highlight, and would be a must-have accessory for anyone who loves to draw or prefers to take handwritten notes. Overall, if you want a device that can seamlessly switch from a laptop to a tablet, the Intel Surface Pro 9 is one of your best bets. Of course, if you are married to the Apple ecosystem, you should consider the iPad Pro.
