Richard Ben-Venist is an American lawyer and legal analyst. He first rose to prominence as a special prosecutor during the Watergate scandal. Richard was a member of the 9/11 Commission and is known for his sharp questioning and criticism of members of the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. From 1968 to 1973, he was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
In addition, from 1971 to 1973, Richard worked as the head of the special prosecution section. From 1973 to 1975, he served as the lead Watergate prosecutor, as head of the Watergate Task Force of the Watergate Special Prosecutor’s Office. Richard was chief counsel to Democrats from 1995 to 1996 on the Senate Whitewater Committee.
The committee investigated various allegations against Bill and Hillary Clinton. In 2000, Richard was appointed President of the Interagency Task Force on Nazi War Crimes and Imperial Japanese Government Records. The group ultimately declassified about 8 million documents related to war crimes in World War II and the post-war period.
